Product discontinuations are among the most disruptive events in an OEM or MRO supply chain. A component that has been reliable for years suddenly has an end-of-life date. The manufacturer’s replacement may not be a drop-in fit. Your engineering team needs to re-qualify something. Production timelines are at risk.

This happens across every product category we serve — relays, power supplies, motor controls, connectors, safety switches. And how your distributor handles it has an enormous impact on how disruptive it actually becomes.

Why Discontinuations Are Accelerating

Component obsolescence has become a systemic risk. In 2023 alone, approximately 473,000 electronic components reached end-of-life, following an even higher figure of 750,000 in 2022 (Z2Data, 2026). According to Luminovo, component lifecycles have dropped by approximately 87% over recent decades — from around 30 years to less than 4 (Luminovo, 2025). Instant obsolescence, where a component is discontinued without formal notice, increased 35% in 2023 (Sourceability, 2025). In that same year, nearly 30% of all end-of-life events occurred without a formal product change notification, meaning manufacturers often learn about discontinued parts only when they try to order (X-Refs, 2025).

For OEM manufacturers and MRO operations whose products have service lives of 10 to 20 years or more, this trend creates a persistent vulnerability. The drivers include:

  • Component-level changes upstream: When a semiconductor inside a motor control relay is discontinued, the relay follows. Your component manufacturer may be responding to upstream supply constraints, not any change in your application.
  • Product line consolidations: Manufacturers periodically rationalize their catalogs, folding older SKUs into newer product families.
  • Regulatory changes: RoHS compliance, UL standard revisions, and regional regulations sometimes force product redesigns that result in new part numbers even when the function is identical.
  • Demand shifts: Low-volume specialty parts are sometimes discontinued when the economics no longer support manufacturing them.

Early Notification

Our authorized manufacturer relationships with ABB, Eaton, Littelfuse, PULS, and others mean we typically receive end-of-life notifications well in advance of public announcement. When we know a product our customers use is being discontinued, we tell them proactively — not because they asked.

Last-Time Buy Analysis

Once an end-of-life date is announced, a window typically opens to place a last-time buy at the original price. We help customers analyze how much of a discontinued part they will likely need over their product’s remaining service life and whether a last-time buy makes economic sense relative to re-engineering costs.

Alternate Qualification Support

Finding a replacement that works in a specific application is not always straightforward. We bring our product knowledge and manufacturer relationships to the problem — identifying candidates, pulling spec sheets, and in many cases connecting customers directly with manufacturer application engineers to accelerate the qualification process.

Inventory Bridge

When customers need time for re-engineering and qualification, we work to source remaining inventory from the channel to bridge the gap — drawing on other distributors, factory warehouses, or secondary markets when the situation requires it.

The customers who navigate discontinuations most smoothly hear about them six months early — not six weeks before their supply runs out. Early notification from a proactive distributor is the single most valuable thing in a discontinuation event.

How to Reduce Your Exposure Before a Discontinuation Hits

  • Know your BOM: Maintain a current list of every electrical component you depend on and who makes it. If that list exists primarily in someone’s head rather than a document, it is a liability.
  • Flag long-service legacy parts: Components unchanged in 10 or more years are candidates for eventual discontinuation. Having an alternate in mind costs nothing.
  • Ask your distributor: Frontier can tell you the current lifecycle status of the components you use most. If you have not asked recently, ask now.
  • Build alternates into your qualification process: For any new build, qualifying a primary and a backup component adds modest upfront effort and significant long-term supply chain resilience.
