IP69K Enclosure Rating Explained: What It Means and When You Need It
Understanding enclosure protection ratings for washdown and high-pressure cleaning environments
⏱ 4 min read • frontierelectric.com
In North America, enclosure protection is governed by UL standards and NEMA type designations — NEMA 1, 4, 4X, 6, 12, and 13 are the ratings that appear in UL listings, panel shop specs, and purchasing decisions. That is the framework North American engineers are trained on and that the industry operates within.
IP ratings — the two-digit Ingress Protection codes you see on equipment nameplates — come from an international standard and are not part of the UL or NEMA framework. But they show up constantly: on motors and sensors imported from Europe and Asia, in food processing and pharmaceutical specs written to global standards, and on equipment built to HACCP requirements. In those applications, understanding what an IP rating means — especially the difference between IP65, IP66, IP67, IP68, and IP69K — directly affects equipment selection, compliance, and uptime.
This article explains the IP rating system in the context of how North American OEM builders, panel shops, and MRO teams actually encounter it.
How the IP Rating System Works
An IP rating consists of two digits. The first digit (0–6) indicates protection against solid particle ingress — dust, debris, and foreign objects. The second digit (0–9K) indicates protection against liquid ingress. For industrial electrical enclosures, the most relevant range is IP54 through IP69K:
- IP54: Dust-protected, splash-proof from any direction
- IP55: Dust-protected, water jet resistant
- IP65: Dust-tight, water jet resistant from any direction
- IP66: Dust-tight, resistant to powerful water jets
- IP67: Dust-tight, resistant to temporary immersion (1 meter, 30 minutes)
- IP68: Dust-tight, resistant to continuous immersion per manufacturer specification
- IP69K: Dust-tight, resistant to high-pressure, high-temperature water jets from any direction
Note: IP67 and IP68 do not imply IP65 or IP66 protection. A device rated IP68 for immersion may not withstand the directed water jet that IP65 specifies. For washdown environments, do not assume that a high second digit covers all liquid exposure modes.
IP69K: The Washdown Standard
IP69K is the rating to look for in any application that involves high-pressure hot water washdown or steam cleaning — food processing lines, dairy equipment, beverage filling systems, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and similar environments. It is the most demanding liquid ingress rating in the IP system.
The IP69K test requires an enclosure to withstand water at 80°C (176°F), applied at 14–16 MPa (approximately 2,000–2,300 PSI) from a nozzle held 10–15 cm from the surface, at a flow rate of approximately 14–16 liters per minute, directed at 0°, 30°, 60°, and 90° angles. That is a significantly more severe test than IP67 or IP68, which use still water. An enclosure that passes IP67 immersion testing may fail IP69K because the high-velocity jet can penetrate seals that hold under immersion.
When a food or pharmaceutical OEM specifies IP69K on their machine build, or when a customer’s equipment nameplate shows IP69K, that is the spec to match — not the nearest NEMA equivalent. There is no direct NEMA equivalent to IP69K.
Schmersal and Hammond Manufacturing IP69K Products
For OEM machine builders serving food processing, dairy, beverage, or pharmaceutical customers, both Schmersal safety switches and Hammond Manufacturing enclosures offer IP69K-rated products.
Schmersal’s AZ 200 series safety switches are available in stainless steel housings with IP69K ratings, suited for washdown zones where cleaning protocols are aggressive. Hammond Manufacturing’s 1553 series stainless steel enclosures are IP69K rated and available in a range of sizes for harsh hygiene-standard environments.
NEMA Ratings vs. IP Ratings
North American engineers typically encounter NEMA type designations — NEMA 1, 4, 4X, 6, 12, 13 — as the governing framework for enclosure selection. NEMA ratings are based on UL standards (UL 50 for enclosure construction, UL 508A for industrial control panels) and include tests beyond liquid protection: corrosion resistance, external icing, gasket integrity, and others. That broader test scope makes direct IP-to-NEMA conversion imprecise.
As a general reference:
- NEMA 4 is broadly comparable to IP65
- NEMA 4X adds corrosion resistance beyond IP65
- NEMA 6 is broadly comparable to IP67
- There is no direct NEMA equivalent to IP69K
When a spec or nameplate shows an IP rating, it is typically because the equipment was designed to an international standard or because a customer operating under global food safety or pharmaceutical requirements specified it. In those cases, match the IP rating directly rather than converting to NEMA — especially for IP69K, where no NEMA equivalent exists.
A common and costly error is specifying IP65 or NEMA 4 enclosures for applications where IP69K is required. The cost difference at installation is small; the cost of moisture ingress, component failure, and line stoppage during production far exceeds the enclosure upgrade cost.
